Knife newbies often fall into the trap of assuming that the knife handle is simply an aesthetic choice. These materials can be metalsynthetic or natural and each with their own set of strengths and weaknesses. Stainless steel provides excellent durability and resistance to corrosion but is not particularly lightweight.
In addition, stainless steel handles can be rather slippery so manufacturers have to incorporate etching or ridges to provide the required friction. Aluminum, usually anodized for color, hardness and protection, is a very durable material for knife handles. The most common type of aluminum used today is the T alloy which has tremendous tensile strength.
The Ultimate Guide to Knife Handle Materials
Properly texturized, an aluminum handle can provide a reasonably secure grip that is also comfortable and easy for extended use. On the downside, if you use your knife quite a bit during colder winter months, you might find the handle uncomfortably cold given its conductive properties. Aluminum is generally considered inferior to its stronger, yet more expensive brother Titanium which tends to be found on the more premium knives.
Titanium is a lightweight metal alloy, and it offers the best corrosion rust resistance of any metal. Note that both Titanium and Aluminum suffer from being prone to scratches as compared to stainless steel.
Titanium can be given a unique and attractive color through the anodization process which is particularly common on custom knives. Further, it can be texturized through bead-blasting. Beware the Titanium marketing machine however. Pros: Strong, light, corrosion resistance Cons: Relatively expensive, prone to scratches.
Carbon fiber is a somewhat generic term referring to thin strands of carbon being tightly woven then set in resin. The result?
A tremendously strong yet lightweight material that is also rather expensive. Production of carbon fiber handles is a labor intensive process, though, so it tends to be found only on the higher-end knives. This stuff is not cheap! Pros: Strong, lightweight, eye-catching Cons: Expensive, brittle. Micarta is a popular branded example of a phelonic — which refers to different substances made with the organic compound Phenol a type of resin. Thin layers of linen cloths are soaked in a phenolic resin, producing a product that is lightweight, strong, and looks somewhat dressier than GThe folks at Flytanium have a passion for customizing fine cutlery.

Newest Review Oldest Review Avg. Very nice addition. Just received this in the post yesterday and loved it off the bat. Wish they were carbon fiber scales instead. The blackened blade is a little stiff at first but breaking in well today and learning how to properly flick it open carefully as the blade is rather sharp straight from Spyderco. I chose a blackened blade as I tend to prefer a subdued look, especially of blades this size and in public use, EDC.
Blade is of top quality and looks quite well balanced in form and function, scales patinating well already. The compression lock is great and well positioned too. Definitely a good investment and worth the cost for a beautiful tool. Server: web01 All rights reserved. Thanks for subscribing. He bought me a Wenger Backpacker II and I cherished that thing so much I kept the original box and instruction sheet for the next 15 years. I recently was organizing my EDC and found the Wenger again. Well, too bad! Victorinox does not make a model exactly like that. Luckily, there is a small group of craftspeople out there that are serving this niche community of Swiss Army knife enthusiasts.
These mostly self-taught engineers have figured out how to leverage everything from handfiles and homemade forges to even CNC machines to produce custom scales on up to completely custom SAKs. Before I introduce you to them, a few things need explaining. The prices of these mods can be ten times that amount. So, what can be replaced or modified on a standard Swiss Army knife? Practically anything, really. Early mods were really simple and consisted of drilling out the rivets, swapping out tools for a configuration that was more appealing, then peening the ends of the brass pins to secure it.
A lot has changed since those early days and now nearly every part can be swapped or modified. The simplest way of adding some flair or customization to your SAK is by swapping out the scales. All stock SAKs come with cellidor plastic scales.
They attach by snapping onto three washers on each side and are friction fit. They can be loosened but each time they are removed, it becomes harder to reinstall them. The simplest scale upgrade would be to simply buy a new set of scales from the manufacturer, perhaps in a different color, and snap them on. The next level would be to buy aftermarket scales. These come in brass, copper, G10, carbon fiber and wood.
Usually they have three slots on each side to accommodate the washers. One thing to keep in mind is almost any change in scales you make will result in greater weight, especially if you are replacing them with brass or copper; they are significantly heavier than plastic or titanium. Finally, the ulimate scale upgrade would be replacing not just the scales but also the external structure of the SAK itself. Are you a current member with account or password issues?

I have, unfortunately, started to succumb to the siren call and am pricing out an all-copper "dress EDC" kit right now, starting with a Maratac AAA, Sunshine Products stash and Hinderer Investigator pen.
The one piece that is vexing me right now however is the knife. I've seen a few, rare, copper colored SAKs, but no actual solid copper handle scales on a knife, short of a bunch of rustic fixed blades and one slipjoint by Beretta which is nice but not what I want.
So, I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but does anyone make a production folder with copper scales or scale inserts? How about custom scales? Joined: May 18, Messages: Likes Received: 1, Custom scales are custom, so I don't see why you can't get copper ones made for you.

Sal mentioned there might be a chance of a Ladybug in that material. Perhaps this was just a pacifying attempt but I'm full of hope! Joined: Jul 27, Messages: 1, Likes Received: 14, Silicone bronze is a good grade to use, common in the USA. It was developed during the second wold war for marine fittings and propellers. The colour can be left as is or patinated many different colours including my favourite verdigris. AslanwarchildGrayMouser and 1 other person like this. Good suggestions!Stm32h753i eval

Personally, I adore the way these metals age over time. Many people force patinas on carbon blades so they are probably in the same boat! I expect for people who love the look but hate the aging a polished scale can be sealed with an industrial epoxy.
They already do this for jewelry but it's treated for lighter-duty. Even e. Re: Spyderco knives: Copper, Brass and Bronze scales? I voted copper because I like the look of it my favorite EDC pen is made of copper and I like that you can either let it patina or wipe it down with lemon juice once in a while to bring the shine back if you like.
I also voted copper because I think it's easier to machine than bronze, which is pretty tough material, and I personally like the shade of copper better than brass. Copper bolsters and wood would be great. My only issue with copper is weight. Maybe with a carbon steel? Happy to be part of this great forum and group of down to earth spyderco addicts, Thanks Sal and gang. Not traditionally "heavy" but certainly compared to Ti and and Al. I only have one knife with copper parts. The scales are thin and the liners are titanium but it has other embellishments that add to the weight. I recall it's like 3. Not honestly sure how phosphor bronze would fare in that regard, but copper and brass would be no-goes for me. I've been buying a bunch of different copper EDC things as I find them. I don't mind the weight either.
Would love to see something copper from Spyderco. I've drawn some ideas that I thought might work for an ethnic series knife using copper scales, but still need to make it in solidworks.
I bought some copper sheets to make custom scales. These handsome grip kits will transform your knife into everything you'd expect from a hard working cutting tool. They are tough as nails, yet elegant and refined. Once you get your hand wrapped around a set, everything else will feel like a toy. Give them a try, we guarantee you won't be disappointed. Each kit comes with 2 grip panels, 1 backspacer, and all necessary hardware pivot assembly is reused from your existing knife.

You break it and we replace it at no cost to you. Due to the nature of Type III Hardcoat anodizing there may be slight color variations from batch to batch or side to side. Sometimes there may also be some light mottling in the color, or the grain of the aluminum may show through the coating.
This is normal and in NO way affects the performance or function of the grips whatsoever. We feel that it is a worthy trade off for a vastly superior coating hardness. For help with installation please refer to our YouTube video below:.

Flytanium customer service is amazing!!! I reached out to Flytanium directly and they told me I could ship my knife out to them and they could put it together since the copper scales had a slight bend in them causing it not to open properly. They got it on a Wednesday and now it should be back in my hands by Monday all fixed up. The patina grows in very nicely after a couple of days in the Chicago climate.
The PM2 scales are a perfect match. They look great! They are however quite heavy and slick. I honestly don't mind the weight but the smoothness makes it a little harder to hold and open. They are also a bit bright out of the box for my taste but a patina should form after some use. Server: web02 All rights reserved.
